For over 800 years of the existence of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans), the Order has been actively involved in education around the world. The Dominicans in Nigeria and Ghana have continued in that tradition of providing quality education at all levels: primary, secondary and tertiary (the Dominican Primary Schools, Colleges in Ofinso, Ghana, Lagos and Rivers States, and the Dominican University in Ibadan, Nigeria). In order to continue to reach out to more people in a bid to providing quality education in learning and character, the Dominicans established the Dominican College, located in the Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, which opens this year, 2021. It is a Catholic co-educational (mixed-gender) boarding secondary school.
The concept and philosophy of “Dominican Education” flows from Dominican Preaching, which is instructional (intellect), motivational (will) and actional (skill). In the same way, in our provision of the educational services of teaching and learning, this tri-partite and holistic dimension and formation is achieved in inculcating in the students: what to believe (cognitive); what to desire (affective) and; what to do (psychomotor). And, there is a particular focus on the truth value that is inculcated in the head, the heart and the hands, which takes care of the different aspects of the human person. And since every human person is made in the image and likeness of God, the Dominican College is poised to give some rays of hope to some out-of-school children and children at the lowest ebb of society by affording them sound and quality education.
Having been very much acquainted with educational needs, especially in our contemporary society, the Dominican College, Abuja provides a very conducive ambience for focused learning. The College has a well thought-out layout, designed buildings and is a homely environment for the mission of teaching and learning. The natural landscape complemented by the beautiful buildings obviously facilitates an excellent learning environment. Once again, you are welcome to the Dominican College, a safe, secure, healthy and cordial atmosphere for teaching and learning.
